Since I joined JANGYU Toastmasters, I always tried to handle with social problems. Tonight, I’d like to tell you my stories about Jangyu toastmasters meeting.

I remember when I first met Jayson. I believe meeting him was like an accidental. The first time I saw him was his post on FACEBOOK. He said “Hello. My name’s Jayson and I live in JANGYU”. As soon as I saw his post, I decided to send him a message. After that, we started to do a language exchange meeting. It didn’t go well, but our determination and commitment to meet once a week for half of a year has resulted in me gaining much confidence in English, so I want to thank you for that.

I remember my first speech in JANGYU TOASTMASTERS. It was cold night in 2014. In order to give a speech, I tried to memorize the script and learn gestures from YOUTUBE. On the day of my speech, there were six members sitting chairs. When I started to say first sentence, I kept stumbling over my words and sweated profusely, because I was very nervous. As soon as I finished my speech, I realized that I was completely drenched in sweat. Every member said it was great speech, but I felt disappointed with my first speech. The result was not good, but this speech was the most memorable speech in my life.

I remember MICHAEL’S good-bye party. That was first time I received an invitation from non-Korean. At a party, I was the only native-Korean speaker. That time, I couldn’t say anything at all. Because all people spoke English very fast like a BBC hard talk. I was very busy translating their words into Korean while people were talking to each other. But For me, it was good opportunity to get to know how my English level and their cultures were.

Some of you must remember the infamous night at Mario’s bar in Naewae Dong. Gratte who was member in jangyu toastmasters, was serenading us with his guitar concert while jayson was making trips to and from the bar, to re-fill the bottles of soju that we were drinking, so fast.. Jayson magically arrived at a 찜질방, I got sick and scott took me my apartment doorstep with a driver. That experience made me decided to not go to bar in Naewae dong again.

I remember a lot of things from the various toastmaster meetings.
In JANGYU-TOASTMASTERS, giving various speeches and opinion made me gain much confidence in my English and expand my minds. I believe joining JANGYU toastmasters made me what I am.
Is there anyone who remember what bucket list was. Last year, I told you that one of my bucket lists was working abroad, like you all. Today, I’d like to say this. I completed this.
After two months, I’ll go to the United States, Manhattan to work as system engineer.

Again, I’d like to thank everyone.
Thank you.

The things that I have learned from JANGYU Toastmaster

Before giving my speech, I’d like to talk about how I’ve lived. My name is Jin kim and I live in Kim Hae. When I was child, I was not sociable person. I was so quiet. One day my teacher sent my mom a message and it said “I’m so worried about Jin’s future. Because he always gazes at the sky during class and he doesn’t like to do anything.” Furthermore he has no dreams. I hope your son can find something that he can do very well and dream. After that, I started to try many new things that I’ve never done before. One of the things that I tried was learning English. In order to learn English, I tried to memorize the pop’s lyrics and movie subtitles. Sometimes, I would chat with non-Koreans on OMEGLE which is a chat site. When I was 24 years old, I joined the English club called Toastmasters. I believe joining Toastmasters was not only the most memorable challenge but also the biggest chance to improve my English skills and have confidence. I was always disappointed by my English when I was a member of Toastmasters. But I didn’t give up and tried to overcome difficulties. Today, I’d like to talk about what I’ve learned from Toastmasters.

Lesson 1 disappointing experience is the best opportunity to get to know myself.
My most memorable disappointing experience of my English was when I first met Jayson. I believe meeting him was like an accidental. The first time I saw him was his post on FACEBOOK. He said “Hello. My name is Jason and I live in JANGYU.” As soon as I saw his post, I decided to send him a message. After that, we met many times and started to do Language exchange. For me, that meeting was like a BBC hard talk. Because it was very difficult to not only understand Jayson’s English but also say what I wanted. The Most difficult thing about Jayson’s English was it too fast to understand.

I was very disappointed by my English every meeting and I did not feel confident enough to continue doing language exchange meetings. I started to postpone and I ended up canceling it. After a month, he sent me a message saying I hoped you joined Toastmasters which is a speech club. After that, I joined and became a member.

After two months, I gave an ice break speech. That speech was another memorable disappointing experience of my English. In order to give a speech, I tried to memorize the script and learn gestures from YOUTUBE and TED. On the day of my speech, there were six members sitting chairs. When I started to say the first sentence, I kept stumbling over my words and sweated profusely, because I was nervous. As soon as I finished giving the speech, I realized that I was completely drenched in sweat. Every member said it was a good ice break speech, but I wasn’t satisfied with the result and I was disappointed in my English. Sometimes I wanted to give up learning English and also attending Toastmasters. But I couldn’t do it.

I believe the reason why I decided to join Toastmasters again was because of my disappointing experience. Sometimes, this experience made me feel abandonment, but feeling abandoned made me think about myself again and attempt to do things that I gave up. I began to gain my confidence again.

Lesson 2, Do not avoid a situation that you’re not comfortable in
A couple of months ago, I had a toastmaster role. Unfortunately, three members could not be at the meeting due to personal problems. If you are a toastmaster, you MUST expect the unexpected. But I didn’t do anything. Because I wanted to avoid that uncomfortable situation and I thought that someone else would do something if I didn’t. After a few minutes, I saw YuJin who is a members of Jangyu toastmasters start to reassign roles. Furthermore I remembered her words. She said that “You’re the toastmaster today. You have to reassign roles.” When I heard that, I was ashamed of myself.
From this experience, I learned that I avoid uncomfortable situation, so I don’t seem weak to other. If I tried to conceal my weakness, so it wouldn’t too effect my life. Furthermore I learned that I couldn’t do self development if I avoided the situation that I was not comfortable in.

Truth be told, before joining Toastmasters, I avoided situations that I was uncomfortable in and didn’t try new things that I have now done, because I wanted to live without stress. Since I joined Jangyu Toastmasters, I could learn what my weakness point was and how to make up for it. Furthermore it was a good opportunity to try new things that I have never done before.

For me, joining Toastmasters was not only to improve my English skill but also to learn new things that I’ve never know before; as well as to know what my strength and weakness points are. Since I joined Toastmasters, I have given a speech five times in 2 years and I have no idea when my next speech will be. But the one thing that I know is I’ll try to learn new things that I’ve never known before and I’ll continue overcoming my weaknesses.

The illusion of life

Today information telecommunication technology is always changing, biotechnology information telecommunication engineering has made rapid progress which has gone beyond the pale of God. The behavior patterns of humans have been always changing and diversifying. Because of this, it is impossible to predict the pattern of humans and the next move they will make. In our society, many problems are happening and some problem can be caused by illusion. The illusion is always causing problems with human relations. Generally, the meaning of illusion is a false or misleading perception or belief. Illusion is always happening when we communicate with people. In my case, I lived in my illusion of life for 10 years. Today I’d like to talk about two kinds of illusions and my illusion of life.

First of all, I’d like to talk about my illusion of life.
I was born in Chang-won and lived there for about 12 years. When I was 13years old, my family moved to Jang-Yu, which is located next to Chang-Won. At that time, wearing jeans was very popular. That was when I first wore them. It was great and I really loved the color of the jeans. One day, I was walking on the street and I saw a singer’s performance. When I first saw him, I thought his body was perfect. His legs were very slim and he was taller than me.
He instantly became my idol and I started to base my clothing style on him. Because I had no eye for fashion and just wanted to be a fashionable person like him.
I started comparing my body with his body. I hated my body, because I thought that I was fatter than other people. After that, I was afraid to wear jeans and I started to be self-conscious of my appearance. I believed that only fashionable people or people who were naturally slender should wear jeans.

In order to not be self-conscious of my appearance, I started wearing only training clothes in high school. The training clothes were not only unimpressive but also not fancy.
I always wore them if I met my friend, and even when I met a girl friend. When I became a university student, I continued to wear only training clothes. Because of this, there were only two kinds of training clothes and some blue jeans which I had never worn in my wardrobe. Since I wore only training clothes for 10 years, my fashion sense is now lower than other peoples’ fashion sense.

A month ago, my illusion was burst. One day, I thought about my fashion. “I’m a senior and I’m just one semester short of graduating. I have not worn jeans for about 10 years because I believed that only fashionable people or people who were naturally slender could wear jeans. I realized that this reason didn’t make sense.

I decided to change my thoughts and tried to follow the latest fashion.
First of all, I started doing exercise in order to become slender because I thought that the fundamental reason why I couldn’t wear jeans was because I was fatter than others. In order to lose weight, I ran 10 kilometers every day for three months. Three months later, I checked my weight. I was surprised. It was the same. Furthermore, I remembered a documentary I watched. Some days ago, I watched ‘The Human Body Revealed’. The documentary I watched was produced by National Geographic. According to this documentary, the average weight of men who are 5.8 feet tall falls between 58 and 72 kilogram. My weight is normal.

Looking back now, the reason was very simple. I had lived in my life of illusion which I made for almost 10 years. My negative illusion had changed to stereotypes and I could never think outside the box because of my negative illusion.

As I explained, the negative illusion has a magical power to change our life perfectly.
Despite this, there are not only negative illusions but also positive illusions in the world.

A few days ago, I saw a documentary which was produced by Korean educational broadcasting station called EBS.
It says that there are many people who have positive illusion in the world and one of the people that has positive illusion is Barack Obama, who is America’s president. When he was child, he had a big dream of becoming a president. When he told people his dream, nobody believed him. He had always believed in himself and he would always remind himself of his motto ‘l can do it’.
After a few years, he became a president, thanks to his motto.

As I explained, the positive illusion is very powerful.

According to Korean scientific research, our brain can save briefly 40 million words per second when we listen to someone. But our brain can save only 40 out of 40 million words perfectly and we call those 40 words the illusion.
The brain always saves and erases words regardless our will.

In the world, there are many people who have difficulty living their life because of their negative illusion. For example, some people don't like to meet others, because of their native illusion such as black face and gross body. Despite this, some people who know their strengths perfectly and have a positive illusion can make their dreams come true.

Generally, Illusion is related to the complex and the complex is formed by our memories. Illusion is the part of our memory which we want to see, hear and remember. Technically the illusion is like a memory. If we hear something and remember it, then there is a high probability that that memory can be changed to a form of illusion.
We always have illusions. If we have a negative illusion, our life won't come to a happy ending. We need to dispel the whirl of negative illusions from our head and try to have positive illusions.

Think about whether or not you have a negative illusion.
If you have a negative illusion, you may be exposed to this danger.

Help fight against the danger of negative illusion from now on.
If you have a negative illusion, your mind will focus on the negative aspects of your life.

Help fight against the danger of a negative illusion for a better future.

The dangerous social media

Today information telecommunication technology is always changing,
biotechnology information telecommunication engineering has made rapid progress which has gone beyond the pale of God. Advances in technology have helped the human kind live longer and allowed them to communicate with other people using smart-phone and the internet, we live a rich life.
We live in revolutionary times.
The innovative technology of today will be outdated tomorrow.
When we communicate with other people, we always use SOCIAL MEDIA like face-book or twitter and send a message on them.
Most people are unaware of social media’s weak point but I think they do exist.

A month ago, I watched a movie called Disconnect. This movie is based on the criticism and illusion of social media.
In the movie, ben has no friends who he can have a heart-to-heart talk with. Instead, he always listens to music uploads his music videos on social media. His classmate was very unfavorable opinion about him. In order to haze him, he registered a new account on face-book and poses as a beautiful woman.

He approached ben pretending that he was his fan. ben poured out all  his troubles to him. He even sent a picture of his naked body without doubt In accordance with his request. There were many incidents about this picture. He killed himself because of mental stress.

This movie gives the following message.
Leave the SOCIAL MEDIA right now!

Even in my own life, social media has been harmful.
Despite this, I love social media. I like to take pictures and videos about animals and objects and upload them on the social media called kakao-story. I think the reason why we upload our videos and pictures is the same.
In my case, the reason why I upload my pictures and videos is not only to share my life but also to record it. If you see my kakao-story, you can see over six-hundred posts. I don't mind who sees my story or not. I set importance on the act uploading itself.

A few days ago, I had a terrible experience with social media. My friend asked me if I knew  kim bla bla? .
I said I don't know.
He said that she sent your post to me and she already shared your picture to her friends". After I heard him, I said that was absolute and utter nonsense. Because kakao-story is similar with facebook. Only my friends can see my post.
How could she see my picture and share it to her friend. Furthermore I suddenly remembered yesterday's incident.
I saw a post about a handsome man and pretty woman on face-book. There were 10 people who called them attractive on face-book. They were very pretty.

I wanted to see the comment. When I clicked comment button, I saw a very memorable comment. The writer who wrote this impressive comment said that this picture is me. How could you use my picture? Where did you find my picture? I'm really angry and this is a grave intrusion into my privacy and an abuse of human rights. I'll report this to the police.

We used the social media in order to share our life and record it.

If a stranger sees you post and shares it, it’s terrible.

Help fight against the danger of social media from now on.

Search for your name on the internet. Remember your picture can be shared by a stranger. You may be exposed to this danger. Help fight against the danger of social media for a better future.

SOCIAL MEDIA is not safe.

20140108

(예를 들어 I can speak english 라는 문장을 말할때 항상 'I can 아 speak 아 english' 라고 말했었다)

Good evening. How are you? it's getting warmer and warmer. isn’t it? I think I always sweat profusely when I give a speech.
So I try to control my body and not to sweat this time.

Today I want to talk about a wide variety of subjects. I'm attending kyungnam
university. I attend the university and I always find problems in my school.
I believe that this problem is not my school's problem but all korean university's problem. I want to give a speech about the problem of korean universities. First. I want to talk about liberal education.
Most Korean universities have a liberal education. The people who enroll students in a collage should complete a course of liberal education until graduation. Most student don't know what is the essential meaning of the liberal education until graduation.

What is the liberal education?

The reason why I talk about liberal education is that I feel the necessity to
indicate the problem of liberal education in korea.
It's clear that all Korean universities. so many people ought to understand liberal education and realize its importance.

Recently in a famous university's academic board, a professor said that they' re too busy completing their liberal arts courses. we need an immediate action. this is a good example that shows how the professor think about the liberal education. The liberal education, which they know, is it's not necessary to study liberal arts".

According to the harvard university's report, the purpose of education is to have the liberal education. The meaning of liberal education is not common-sence education but it's free research and education. Again, Liberal education makes student think outside the box and improve their thinking skills and imagination.

But the problem is that liberal education is western method of education and
korean universities take considerable pains to add the liberal education without the original purpose. This word " liberal" itself is not bad. But In koran university, it is seriously distorted. It is good example that the Korean universities overlook set curriculums and aims of the lesson.
So, when Korean educators claim that Korean students have no time to study major subjects, what it means that the student have no time to study major subject. because they always study the liberal education.

I think that the professor who said it voiced concern that despite there were many major knowledge, they always study only liberal arts . But I think that the liberal is not bad thing which make student decrease their interest but it makes students to build an upright character. therefore I think korean university need to set the meaning of liberal education and direction we want to go.
Recently I heard from one TV show that the korean High Skilled Worker is 1/6 of the populated world and the number of people who have high level education has the number one ranking in the world. What is the meaning of High skilled worker?
The dictionary defines a high skilled worker as someone who has acquired special skills though long-term-education and training. We called it specialized job.

when Korean educators claim that Korean students have no time to study major subjects, I need to check my career to know the cause of 1/6 high skilled workers.

The story throws back to the early 2009's.
The reason why I entered a kyungnam university is that I wanted to be a programmer like steven jobs or billgates. They are known to everybody. because they are very famous and computer or smartphone founder.
When I entered a university, I couldn't learn interesting subjects because all student who entered a kyungnam university couldn't make out a schedule. for reference, it was involved with another university. I studied extraneous subject about computer. such as writing, how to give an presentation well. but I don't think that these subject not helped me to Influence my Life. And when I was junior in college, I never learned the skill which i wanted. I wonder what I did for 3years. I guess that this problem is not only my problem also the problem of all university student in korea.

I think that most korean university considers the study based learning theory as being more important than getting special skill. Most students learn a variety of skills but it is rare that students find.
Most student always confuse their vision after graduation. We can't find the solution to solve the problem of the korean university. I think that this problem is not only school's problem also all student's problem. because the school helps the student to have an opportunity of experiencing. therefore I think that students should study their study about major and find their vision.

Thank you very much.

First of all, I'm honored to be with you today at toast master from one of the famous speech group in the world. Truth be told I never experienced to learn English more systematically and in depth. it was only skin-deep. It's the first time to deliver a speech for an audience.

today i want to tell you one essay from my life. that's it. no big deal. just one essay. my speech topic is that Is success dictated by the academic record?
This words, Grade is not only chance in your life is very famous. it is true. but how about the success?

Many people don't want to believe that the Happiness Does Not Come from getting good Grades. i think there are more people who enter the poorly performing school than the good school. the success may depend on getting the good grade but the happiness doesn't depend it. Some days ago, I read about study on forbs magazine. It looked at 400 rich people from the united states, 50 of them were graduated from harvard university and 270 of them are self made men and 80 of them received a legacy. the study shows that the self made men are the richers than others.

There is no exception in korea. most of the people who works in the government or famous companies like samsung or LG are a graduate of famous University. of course. not everybody who graduated from the famous university get a job.

I heard on tv show that the people who graduated from seoul university faces unemployment. I think thats very, very unfortunate. Actually the unknown school's student has many different perspectives about the seoul university student. Generally, we believe that they have more ability than us and that most companies want to employ the seoul university's student. The news have rich implications which the people who graduated from seoul university are smarter than other school 's student and that they become rich. however some of them live in poverty and troubled with unemployment.

Moreover, there are some people who did poorly in school have succeeded in life. it means that the person who studied well and succeeded in life can't appear on television shows because it is not great story. the reason why the people who did poorly in school appear on tv shows is that it is hard to success.

In my case, i'm not a famous university student and I think I have a small chance to achieve success. I wonder what is the best way to achieve success in my life.

I think that It's probably hard to answer the question and it is easy to find what the success is at first. I think that the true successful life is to feel worth from my effort and to feel happy.
Again, I believe that the true successful life means that finding the value to give my life and to pursuit it with all I have got and leaving no regrets.
