최근에 Toastmasters에 참가하였다.우리 모임의 인원은 10명정도로 외국인이 절반 이상을 차지 하고 있다.이 때문에 매우 다양한 표현들을 듣고 배울 수 있다.각설하고, 내가 답답했던 표현들은 다음과 같다.- 억압하다/제제하다: suppress , be controlled by, etcsuppress the rights and liberties.most people are controlled by the authorities, stripped of their rights, and are suppressed.suppresses their right to express their religious beliefs.- 왜곡하다: distort, twist, pervertThe historian sometimes distorted the facts.

Koreans usually tend to think the criterion of having good English skills is the pronunciation, but actually, the criterion of foreigners' is very different from ours.

대부분의 영상을 보면 자신의 의견만 말하고, 이에 대한 근거를 말하지 않는 경우가 많다. 추측컨데, 영어실력향상을 위한 한 프로그램일것이라고 생각한다. 영어인터뷰영상을 보며 느낀점이 많다.

1. 답변을 했을 때 이유는 따라나와야 된다는 것.

2. 답변에 대한 근거 또는 이유는 구체적으로 말해야 한다는 것. 

3. 긴장은 너무 하면 말이 빨라지거나 동작이 커진다는 것.

4. 답변을 할 때 신속보다 생각하여 정확히 답변해야 한다는 것.

5. 자신이 질문을 할 때는 정확하게 질문해야 한다는 것.

6. 영어가 모국어가 아닌 외국인(한국인이 아닌)은 표현을 잘 못해도 당당하게 말한다는 것.

예전에 매거진에서 모국어가 아닌 외국인을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였는데, 한국인은 영어를 말할때 부끄러움을 가지고 말한다는 것이다. 맞는 말이다. 예전에 이와 같은 경험을 한적이 있다.

예전에 국내에서 외국인 교수의 가정에서 영어를 배우기 위해 스테이 한적이 있다. 일명 국내 홈스테이.

그때는 영어를 말할 때 매우 긴장하였고, 심지어 땀도 났다. 그만큼 긴장을 했다는 것이다. 당시 외국인 교수가 어떤 질문을 하면 그 질문에 대한 이해를 못해도 항상 Yes 로 대답하였다. 결국, 스테이를 하며 영어실력도 향상시키지 못하였고, 두려움에 대한 감정도 떨쳐버리지 못했다. 무엇이든 피하면 그때는 피할 수 있을지도 모르겠지만 언제가 다시 그 상황이 닥처온다는 것. 상황을 다시 겪을때는 처음처럼 피하는 것은 불가능할 수도 있다는 것.

Expect vs Predict

- Predict : 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 미래에 관해 예언하는 의미로 현상이나 경향을 분석해 예상하는 것이므로 결과를 확신할 때가 많다. 경제 전망이나 일기 예보 등이 이에 해당한다.
